It must have been shortly after Rusticus’s death that Marcus began writing the notes he titled simply ‘To Himself,’ which today we call the Meditations. No longer able to correspond with Rusticus about philosophy, Marcus now wrote to himself about philosophy. He became, in a sense, his own teacher.
